We recently headed out for a hike on the Martha Grove Trail Loop near San Diego, California. The cloudy October morning made for comfortable conditions as we set off to explore the trail and see which birds we could find along the way. Even with a quieter day for birdwatching, there was plenty to enjoy.

The California Scrub-jays were another highlight, with many appearing along the trail. We watched them stashing acorns, a fascinating behavior to observe up close. Their busy preparations added a fun element to the hike, and it was great to see so many of these familiar San Diego birds going about their routines.

A Rewarding October Hike

Overlook Overlook

Although we saw fewer species than on some of our more bird-filled outings, the Martha Grove Trail Loop still delivered an enjoyable morning outdoors. The abundance of Yellow-rumped Warblers, the California Scrub-jays stashing acorns, and the mix of sparrows, hummingbirds, and other local birds made the 3.7-mile hike worthwhile.
