During our recent trip to Washington, we hiked the Cascade Pass Trail in North Cascades National Park. It turned out to be one of the most rewarding hikes of our trip, combining spectacular mountain scenery with some memorable wildlife encounters.

The 6.9-mile trail is moderate in difficulty, gradually climbing through forests before opening up to breathtaking alpine views. Every step brought us closer to towering peaks and dramatic landscapes that make the North Cascades so unforgettable.

Spectacular Views Along the Way

As we gained elevation, the scenery became more impressive with every turn. Rugged mountains, green slopes, and distant glaciers created incredible views that made us stop often to simply admire the landscape.

Forest Birds Everywhere

The lower portions of the trail were full of bird activity. We saw a lot of Chestnut-backed Chickadees moving through the trees, while a few Pacific Wrens added their beautiful songs to the peaceful forest.

Familiar Feathered Friends

We were also happy to spot a Red-breasted Nuthatch working its way along the bark of a nearby tree. Watching it climb effortlessly along the trunk is always a treat, no matter how many times we see one.

A Curious Mountain Resident

One of the highlights away from the birds was spotting a Golden-mantled Ground Squirrel. It seemed completely at home among the rocks and paused just long enough for us to enjoy watching it before continuing on its way.

An Incredible Mountain Goat Encounter

Another unforgettable moment came when we spotted a Mountain Goat high on the mountainside. Watching it effortlessly navigate the steep terrain was an amazing reminder of how perfectly adapted these animals are to life in the alpine environment.

After the steady climb, arriving at Cascade Pass felt like a well-earned reward. The surrounding peaks, alpine scenery, and wide-open views created an unforgettable moment where we could pause and appreciate the beauty of the North Cascades.

Between the breathtaking mountain scenery, peaceful forest, and wonderful wildlife encounters, the Cascade Pass Trail easily became one of the highlights of our North Cascades trip.
