During our recent trip to Washington, we set out to hike the Iceberg Lake via Chain Lakes Trail in North Cascades National Park.

The morning began under thick clouds, but as the hike went on, the sun occasionally peeked through, bringing a little extra color to the dramatic mountain scenery.

A Moderate Trail with Incredible Scenery

The 4.1-mile trail is moderate in difficulty and offers a rewarding combination of alpine meadows, rocky slopes, and sweeping mountain views.

The changing weather made the hike even more memorable. The clouds created a mysterious atmosphere early on, and when patches of sunlight finally reached the landscape, the surrounding peaks and meadows looked even more spectacular.

A Pair of Alpine Visitors

One of the first birds we spotted was a pair of American Pipits. Seeing them together in the alpine environment felt like the perfect match for the rugged setting and quickly became one of the highlights of the hike.

We also watched an American Robin busy snacking on a few bugs along the trail. It stayed focused on its meal, giving us plenty of time to enjoy observing its behavior before continuing on.

Familiar Faces Along the Trail

A few Dark-eyed Juncos appeared throughout the hike, hopping between rocks and low vegetation. Their constant activity added a familiar and cheerful presence to the mountain landscape.

As we passed through a more wooded section of the trail, we were happy to spot a Hermit Thrush. Its calm presence fit perfectly with the peaceful surroundings and rounded out a wonderful morning of birdwatching.

Reaching Iceberg Lake was a rewarding moment after the steady climb. Surrounded by rugged peaks and still partially framed by lingering clouds, it was the perfect place to pause, take in the scenery, and appreciate just how beautiful the North Cascades are.

By the time we reached the end of the trail, the clouds had begun to break just enough to reveal more of the incredible scenery around us.

Between the beautiful mountain landscapes, changing weather, and memorable bird sightings, this hike to Iceberg Lake became one of the highlights of our North Cascades adventure together.
