Last weekend, we headed to the Laguna Mountain area in Cleveland National Forest for a hike along the Pacific Crest Trail to Mount Laguna and Foster Point. The warm June morning provided excellent conditions for a day on the trail and another opportunity to enjoy the mountains together.

A Rewarding Moderate Hike

The 5.2-mile route offered a moderate challenge with a mix of forested paths and scenic viewpoints. The trail was long enough to feel like an adventure while still leaving plenty of time to stop and enjoy the birds we encountered along the way.

As we hiked through the pine forest, we were treated to sweeping views and fresh mountain air.

The combination of open vistas and shaded woodland sections made the trail enjoyable from beginning to end.

Many California Scrub-jays were active throughout the morning. Their calls frequently echoed through the forest, and it seemed like every section of trail had at least one nearby keeping an eye on us.

Wrens and Flycatchers

A couple of House Wrens appeared along the trail, moving quickly through the vegetation and occasionally pausing long enough for a good look.

We also spotted a Western Wood-Pewee perched quietly among the trees, patiently watching for insects.

Goldfinches Brightening the Forest

Many Lawrence’s Goldfinches were scattered throughout the hike and became one of the most memorable birds of the day.

We also encountered a few Lesser Goldfinches, adding even more color and activity to the forest.

A Singing Highlight

One of the standout moments came when we heard and then located a singing Olive-sided Flycatcher. Listening to its distinctive song echo through the mountains made for a memorable experience and one of the highlights of the hike.

A Special Woodpecker Encounter

Another unforgettable sighting was a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers consisting of an adult male and a juvenile male. We were fortunate enough to watch the adult feeding the young bird, offering a fascinating glimpse into the busy nesting season.

We also spotted a Northern Flicker, adding another woodpecker species to the day's list.

A Wonderful Morning in Laguna Mountains

By the time we returned to the trailhead, we felt refreshed and grateful for another great day outdoors.

The mountain scenery, diverse birdlife, and special family moments among the birds made this hike to Mount Laguna and Foster Point one that we will remember for a long time.
