Last weekend, we returned to the Laguna Mountain area in Cleveland National Forest for a hike on the Red-Tailed Roost and Agua Dulce Trail Loop.

A Moderate Mountain Walk
White-breasted Nuthatch
The 4.6-mile trail offers a moderate hike with a pleasant mix of forest paths, open areas, and gentle elevation changes. It is one of those trails that feels rewarding without being overly strenuous, leaving plenty of time to appreciate the scenery and wildlife.

From the moment we started hiking, the forest seemed full of activity. Bird calls echoed through the pines, and nearly every stretch of trail offered something interesting to see or hear.

Nuthatches Everywhere
White-breasted Nuthatch
One of the most common birds of the morning was the White-breasted Nuthatch. We saw a lot of them moving along tree trunks and branches as they searched for food.

A few Pygmy Nuthatches joined the action, adding their energy to the busy forest canopy.

Chickadee Family Moments
Mountain Chickadee
Many Mountain Chickadees were active throughout the hike, but the most memorable sighting involved a nest. We were lucky enough to watch a parent chickadee return to feed its young, giving us a wonderful glimpse into the busy season of raising a family.

Western Wood-Pewee
A few Western Wood-Pewees perched quietly among the trees, occasionally darting out to catch insects before returning to their favorite branches.

We also spotted an American Robin and a couple of Band-tailed Pigeons moving through the forest.

Colorful Summer Visitors
Lawrence’s Goldfinch
The morning included several colorful sightings as well. A couple of Lawrence’s Goldfinches appeared along the trail, and later we spotted a female Western Tanager among the trees. Both species added bright highlights to an already enjoyable hike.

Allen’s Hummingbird
One of the more exciting moments came when an Allen’s Hummingbird zipped through the area. As always, it seemed to appear and disappear in an instant, leaving us smiling after the brief encounter.

By the time we completed the loop, we felt refreshed and grateful for another beautiful morning in the Laguna Mountains.

The combination of peaceful forest scenery, active birdlife, and the special moment watching a Mountain Chickadee feed its young made this hike one we will remember for a long time.
