Last weekend, we headed out for a hike on the West Mesa and Harper Creek Loop Trail in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park near San Diego.

The warm spring weather and fresh mountain air made it an ideal morning to spend outdoors together.

A Longer Loop with Great Variety

At 7.3 miles, the trail offered a moderate challenge with a rewarding mix of open meadows, oak woodlands, and shaded forest sections.

Calls echoed through the trees while movement in the branches constantly caught our attention as we walked along the trail.

Many California Scrub-jays were active during the hike, hopping between branches and calling loudly from the treetops.

We also spotted a few Common Ravens soaring and gliding above the landscape.

Colorful Grosbeaks Everywhere
Black-headed Grosbeak
One of the most noticeable birds of the morning was the Black-headed Grosbeak.

We saw many of them throughout the hike, their bright coloring and rich songs adding energy to the forest.

We were excited to spot a couple of Black-chinned Sparrows along the trail.

Seeing them quietly perched among the shrubs felt like a special moment during the hike.

Woodpeckers and Flycatchers
Acorn Woodpecker
Many Acorn Woodpeckers kept busy in the trees, their calls carrying through the forest.

Another highlight was finding a pair of nesting Ash-throated Flycatchers, which gave us a fascinating glimpse into spring nesting season.

Warblers, Raptors, and More
Orange-crowned Warbler
We also came across an Orange-crowned Warbler moving through the foliage and a female Western Bluebird perched nearby.

A Red-tailed Hawk sat perched calmly in the distance, while a Phainopepla and a Brewer’s Blackbird added even more variety to the day’s bird list.

By the time we completed the loop, we felt happily tired and grateful for such a rewarding outing.

The combination of beautiful spring scenery, peaceful trails, and so many memorable bird sightings made this hike another wonderful adventure for the two of us.
