Last weekend, we returned to the Laguna Mountain area in Cleveland National Forest for a hike on the Old County Road and Chico Ravine Trail. The crisp spring air and clear skies made it a beautiful morning to spend outdoors together.

The 4.2-mile trail offered a moderate hike with a comfortable mix of gentle climbs and quieter stretches through the forest.

The trail was alive with birds from the very beginning.

Every section seemed to bring new movement and sounds from the trees, making the hike especially enjoyable for birdwatching.

Bluebirds and Finches Along the Trail

We saw many Western Bluebirds perched in open areas, their bright colors standing out beautifully against the forest backdrop. A couple of Purple Finches also appeared nearby, adding another splash of color to the morning.

Chickadees, Juncos, and Nuthatches Everywhere

Many Mountain Chickadees moved constantly through the trees, while a lot of Dark-eyed Juncos hopped along the ground and lower branches.

We also saw a lot of Pygmy Nuthatches busily working their way through the pine trees.

A Special Kestrel Encounter

One of the most memorable moments of the hike came when we discovered a nest with two young American Kestrels.

Watching the young birds peeking out from the nest was an incredible experience and easily the highlight of the day.

We were also excited to spot a Western Warbling Vireo moving through the treetops.

A few Western Wood-Pewees perched quietly nearby, occasionally darting out to catch insects before returning to their branches.

Blackbirds in the Open Areas

A few Brewer’s Blackbirds appeared in more open sections of the trail, walking through the grass and adding even more variety to the morning’s bird sightings.
