Recently, we headed up to the Laguna Mountain area in Cleveland National Forest for a morning hike on the Sunset and Big Laguna Loop to Big Laguna Lake Trail.

The trail offered a nice mix of forested sections and views of Big Laguna Lake.

The contrast between tall pines and open water made the hike feel varied and interesting from beginning to end.

Chickadees and Nuthatches Everywhere

We quickly noticed how active the forest was. A lot of Mountain Chickadees flitted through the trees, constantly moving and calling.

A few White-breasted Nuthatches and an Oak Titmouse joined the activity, working their way along trunks and branches.

Acorn Woodpecker
Many Acorn Woodpeckers were busy throughout the area, their calls echoing through the forest.

We also spotted a Northern Flicker, adding another splash of color and movement to the morning.

Colorful Finches and Warblers
Cassin’s Finch
A few Cassin’s Finches appeared along the trail, while a couple of Yellow-rumped Warblers moved through the trees nearby.

Their subtle colors stood out nicely against the green and brown tones of the forest.

Bluebirds and Lakeside Life
Western Bluebird
Many Western Bluebirds perched in open areas, their bright colors catching the light as they moved between branches.

Near the lake, we spotted a Pied-billed Grebe and a few Red-winged Blackbirds, adding to the diversity of birdlife around the water.

Red-tailed Hawk
Looking up, we noticed a Red-tailed Hawk perched at the top of a tree, scanning the surroundings.

Not long after, an American Kestrel made an appearance, bringing another exciting raptor sighting to the hike.

By the time we finished the loop, we felt refreshed and grateful for such a peaceful and bird-filled morning.

The combination of easy trails, beautiful scenery, and a wide variety of birds made this hike a wonderful way to enjoy the season together.
