We recently set out for a hike on the Foot and Walker Pass Trail in Anza-Borrego Desert State Park near San Diego.

An Easy Desert Walk

The trail covers about 3.6 miles and is easy in difficulty, making it a relaxed and enjoyable hike.

The gentle terrain gave us plenty of opportunities to slow down, take in the scenery, and keep our eyes open for birds along the way.

A Striking Phainopepla

One of the first birds we noticed was a Phainopepla perched in the distance.

Its distinctive shape and presence made it an exciting early sighting and a great start to the hike.

Sparrows All Around

Sparrows were very active during the hike.

We saw a lot of White-crowned Sparrows moving through the brush, along with a few Brewer’s Sparrows and a Chipping Sparrow.

Their constant movement kept us scanning the shrubs as we walked.

Desert Specialists

Black-throated Sparrows appeared frequently along the trail and quickly became one of the most common birds we saw that morning.

Among the rocks, we spotted a couple of Rock Wrens hopping and pausing on the stones.

We were also excited to see a Ladder-backed Woodpecker, a bird perfectly suited to the desert environment.

Raptors in the Sky

Looking up, we noticed a Prairie Falcon moving across the open sky, a thrilling sight against the bright blue backdrop.

A Turkey Vulture also drifted overhead, gliding effortlessly on the rising air.

By the time we completed the loop, we felt refreshed and grateful for the quiet beauty of Anza-Borrego.
