A Sunny Start on Spooners Mesa

We recently spent a beautiful morning hiking the Spooners Mesa Trail Loop near San Diego. The sunshine and clear skies made it a perfect day to be outside, and the quiet trail gave us plenty of time to enjoy the landscape and watch for birds.

The 3.2-mile loop offers a moderate hike that feels just right for a relaxed outing. With gentle elevation changes and open stretches of trail, it kept us moving at a comfortable pace while giving us time to pause and look around.

Morning Light Across the Mesa

The early sun cast warm light across the mesa, highlighting the surrounding hills and shrubs. It was one of those mornings when everything seemed calm and bright, making the hike feel especially refreshing.

A Hawk in the Sky
Red-tailed Hawk
Looking up, we spotted a Red-tailed Hawk soaring high above the trail. It circled slowly in the open sky, taking advantage of the rising air currents while scanning the ground below.

Finches and Sparrows Along the Trail
House Finch
Bird activity was steady throughout the hike. We saw a lot of House Finches moving through the shrubs, their cheerful calls carrying through the air. A few White-crowned Sparrows also appeared along the trail, quietly foraging near the brush.

A few California Gnatcatchers flitted through the vegetation, rarely sitting still for long. Not far away, we spotted a couple of Northern House Wrens moving energetically through the branches, constantly exploring their surroundings.

Cassin’s Kingbird
We also had some great looks at flycatchers during the hike. A Cassin’s Kingbird perched prominently, keeping watch over the area. Nearby, we saw both a Black Phoebe and a Say’s Phoebe, each taking short flights before returning to their perches.

Northern Harrier
Another exciting sight came when a Northern Harrier glided low over the landscape, flying with its distinctive steady motion. Later on, we noticed an Orange-crowned Warbler moving quietly through the shrubs, adding one more species to our morning list.

By the time we finished the loop, we felt refreshed and happy. Between the sunny weather, the peaceful trail, and the variety of birds we encountered, it was another wonderful morning outdoors that we were glad to share together.
