Last weekend, we set out for a peaceful hike along the Old County Road and Chico Ravine Trail in the Laguna Mountain area.

The 4.2-mile loop is moderately challenging, offering just enough elevation and variety to keep things interesting. With the sun shining brightly and the air cool and clear, it was the perfect start to a December morning.

The trail greeted us with golden light filtering through the pines and oaks. The crisp morning air felt refreshing as we stepped into the quiet forest, where each footfall echoed softly against the leaf-covered ground. It was the kind of morning that instantly lifts your spirits.

Woodpeckers Announcing Their Presence
Northern Flicker
Almost immediately, the forest’s rhythmic soundtrack began. A Northern Flicker flashed its patterned wings as it swooped from trunk to trunk.

Not far ahead, a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers tapped steadily on the bark, their sharp drumming carrying through the ravine.

An Abundance of Acorn Woodpeckers

As we continued, we entered a stretch filled with oak trees—and suddenly it was Acorn Woodpecker central. Dozens of them called, chattered, and zipped between trees, stocking away acorns and keeping guard over their granaries. Their playful energy added a lively touch to the trail.

Small Birds and Soft Movements
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
In the quieter pockets of the path, a few Ruby-crowned Kinglets darted around the branches. Their constant motion and tiny size made each sighting feel like a small victory. Watching them hop and flick through the foliage always brings a smile.

Purple Finch
One of the highlights came when we spotted a Purple Finch perched among the branches, glowing in the sunlight. Its soft coloring contrasted beautifully with the deep greens of the forest, making the moment feel special and calm.

Nuthatches at Work
White-breasted Nuthatch
Farther along, several White-breasted Nuthatches climbed and descended tree trunks with their signature style, searching for insects tucked into the bark. Their nasal calls echoed lightly through the woods, adding to the peaceful mountain atmosphere.

A Surprise Overhead
Band-tailed Pigeon
Just as the trail opened up near the ravine, a group of Band-tailed Pigeons flew overhead. Their broad wings and graceful flight stood out against the powder-blue sky, and watching them glide above the treetops made the moment especially memorable.

The Old County Road and Chico Ravine Trail offered everything we love about Laguna Mountain—quiet forest paths, pockets of sunlight, and plenty of bird activity.
