Last weekend, we set out for a refreshing hike on the Star Party Trail and Pacific Crest Trail in the Laguna Mountain area of Cleveland National Forest.

It was one of those crisp, sunny November mornings where the light filters through the pines and the air feels perfectly clear. The peaceful atmosphere made it an ideal day to explore this scenic stretch of the mountains.

The combined trail loop, about 4.5 miles in length and moderate in difficulty, offered a great balance of open views and shaded woodland paths.

The trailhead greeted us with the scent of pine and oak, and as we began our hike, the quiet rhythm of our steps mixed with the soft sounds of morning birdsong.

Life Among the Pines
Pygmy Nuthatch
It didn’t take long before we spotted some of the forest’s regular residents. Several Pygmy Nuthatches chattered and flitted from trunk to trunk, while a nearby Oak Titmouse called from the branches above. Their cheerful activity set a lively tone for the morning.

Further along, we came upon a noisy group of Acorn Woodpeckers hard at work. They were busy stashing acorns into the holes they had carved in the trees—a sure sign that winter was on the horizon.

Watching their coordination and energy was both fascinating and entertaining; they always seem to bring a bit of humor to the forest.

Dark-eyed Junco
Throughout the trail, we saw countless Dark-eyed Juncos hopping across the path, their tails flashing white as they moved.
Mountain Chickadee
They were joined by many Mountain Chickadees darting through the pines, their bright calls echoing through the crisp air. These small, lively birds seemed to be everywhere, filling the woods with motion.

Red-tailed Hawk
At one point, we paused to watch a Red-tailed Hawk gliding gracefully above the treetops. Its wide wings caught the sunlight beautifully as it circled in the blue sky.

Splashes of Color and Sound
California Scrub-jay
Near a grove of oaks, a California Scrub-jay appeared, flashing its striking blue feathers as it called sharply from a branch.

Not long after, a White-breasted Nuthatch crept headfirst down a pine trunk, showing off its unique foraging style. Each bird seemed to have its own personality, contributing to the morning’s charm.

Tiny, Restless Visitors
Ruby-crowned Kinglet
Toward the end of our hike, we caught sight of a couple of Ruby-crowned Kinglets flitting through the underbrush. Their constant movement and soft calls added a playful touch to the quieter sections of the trail.

We even caught a glimpse of that bright red crown for a moment—a flash of color that always feels like a gift.

As we looped back toward the trailhead, the forest glowed in the gentle warmth of late morning sunlight. The combination of birds, fresh air, and quiet companionship made the hike deeply rewarding.

The Star Party and Pacific Crest Trail proved to be the perfect setting for a peaceful Saturday adventure—full of life, beauty, and the simple joy of being outdoors together.
