A Peaceful Afternoon in Olympic National Park

During our recent trip to Washington, we took the opportunity to hike the Staircase Rapids Loop Trail in Olympic National Park. This beautiful 2.1-mile loop is rated easy, and it was a perfect way to spend a warm and cloudy afternoon in the lush temperate rainforest.

From the moment we stepped onto the trail, we were surrounded by towering evergreens, moss-draped branches, and the gentle sounds of the Skokomish River nearby. The scenery was calming, with soft light filtering through the clouds and reflecting off the water.

Early on, we were greeted by the cheerful calls of Chestnut-backed Chickadees flitting between the branches. Their rust-colored backs and energetic personalities added a playful feel to the quiet forest setting.

The Sound of the Pacific Wren

As we wandered deeper into the woods, we heard the unmistakable, bubbly song of a Pacific Wren. Though small and well-camouflaged, one eventually revealed itself near the trail, hopping along a fallen log and singing its heart out.

A Striking Red-Breasted Sapsucker

One of the highlights came when we spotted a Red-breasted Sapsucker, clinging to the side of a tree and drilling methodically into the bark. Its bright red head and breast stood out beautifully against the mossy green backdrop.

Further along the trail, we caught a glimpse of a Swainson's Thrush, briefly visible as it darted from one thicket to another. Its flute-like call echoed softly through the trees—a hauntingly beautiful sound that lingered in the still air.

A Quiet Encounter with a Barred Owl

The most unexpected and magical moment came when we spotted a Barred Owl, perched silently on a low branch. It watched us calmly with its large, dark eyes, completely unfazed by our presence. We stood still for a few minutes, taking in the moment with quiet awe.

The trail looped along the Skokomish River, where the rapids tumbled over smooth stones and created a soothing soundtrack. We paused here to sit on a rock, listen to the water, and reflect on how lucky we were to experience such a peaceful slice of nature.
