Overlook
Last weekend, we set out for a hike on the Lower Santa Ysabel Road Trail, not far from San Diego. This moderate 6.7-mile trail offered a rewarding mix of open views, quiet oak woodlands, and peaceful stretches of grassland. The warm and sunny weather made for perfect hiking conditions as we ventured deeper into the beautiful backcountry.

Winding Into Nature
Santa Barbara ceanothus
The trail gently rolled through the landscape, with long views of the surrounding hills and a few shady patches under ancient oaks. We enjoyed the feeling of being away from it all, surrounded by nature’s quiet rhythm and the occasional rustle of leaves in the breeze.

Welcomed by a Woodpecker
Acorn Woodpecker
Early in the hike, we heard the familiar tapping of an Acorn Woodpecker. Sure enough, one appeared high up on an oak trunk, busy adding to its stash of acorns. Its clown-like face and sharp call brought an instant smile. It was a great way to start the birdwatching portion of our morning.

Flashes of Movement
Anna’s Hummingbird
We saw a few Anna’s Hummingbirds darting from branch to branch, catching the light with their shimmering feathers. Their sudden movements and quiet buzzing always make them a fun challenge to spot, and they added bursts of color to the trail’s more subtle tones.

A California Classic
California Thrasher
One of the highlights of the day was seeing a California Thrasher working its way through the shrubs. With its curved bill and quick movements, it paused just long enough for a clear view before diving back into the underbrush. Its presence added a bit of flair to the quiet hillside.

Familiar Faces
California Towhee
We also spotted a California Towhee, hopping confidently along the trail’s edge, and a California Scrub-jay, calling loudly from a tree above. These birds always feel like reliable companions during our local hikes, with their distinctive personalities.

Sparrows and Oaks
White-crowned Sparrow
In the grassier sections of the trail, we came across a couple of White-crowned Sparrows, their crisp head stripes standing out as they flitted through the low branches. Not far from them, an Oak Titmouse made a brief but delightful appearance, fluffed up and busy exploring a tangle of twigs.
