Overlook Overlook

Last weekend, we headed out for a hike on the Lower Otay Reservoir: West Side Trail near San Diego, CA. The trail, an easy 4.3-mile route, winds along the edge of the reservoir, offering open skies, sparkling water, and scenic views. It was a warm and sunny day, perfect for a relaxed and peaceful stroll through nature.

A Cheerful Start

Cassin’s Kingbird Cassin’s Kingbird

We started off at a gentle pace, enjoying the bright blue sky and the golden light reflecting off the water. Almost right away, we saw a Cassin’s Kingbird perched confidently on a branch, its tail flicking as it called out. Not far from it, a Red-tailed Hawk was quietly perched in a nearby tree, calmly scanning the landscape below.

Tiny Darts of Color

As we continued along the trail, a few Anna’s Hummingbirds zipped past us, their wings buzzing like tiny motors. One paused long enough on a shrub for us to admire its iridescent colors before vanishing into the brush. These little bursts of movement added extra liveliness to the warm afternoon air.

Sparrows in the Brush

In the quieter stretches of trail, we spotted a couple of White-crowned Sparrows hopping through the underbrush. Their crisp black-and-white head stripes made them easy to identify. Nearby, a Song Sparrow serenaded us with its sweet, varied tune, a familiar and comforting sound.

A Colorful Surprise

One of the highlights of the hike came when we saw a Black-headed Grosbeak perched in a small tree. Its bold orange chest and dark head stood out against the green foliage, and it stayed still just long enough for a good look.

Not far away, a Western Flycatcher flitted from branch to branch, never staying in one place for too long.

A Dramatic Moment

As we approached a bend in the trail with a clearer view of the reservoir, we noticed an Osprey perched on a branch over the water, eating a fish it had just caught. It was a powerful and awe-inspiring sight, watching this skilled hunter enjoying its catch in the warmth of the sun.

Songs and Shadows

Northern House Wren Northern House Wren

The trail continued to weave through sunny open areas and shady patches. In a quiet grove, we heard the chattering of a Northern House Wren, its tiny body full of energy and song. A Say’s Phoebe perched nearby, wagging its tail and scanning the air for insects.

Goldfinches Galore

Toward the end of our loop, we saw many Lesser Goldfinches fluttering around the bushes, their bright yellow bellies shining in the sunlight. They seemed to be everywhere, filling the air with their cheerful chatter and quick movements.

Wrapping Up the Day

As we made our way back to the trailhead, we looked out over the peaceful reservoir, feeling grateful for another beautiful hike.

The Lower Otay Reservoir: West Side Trail gave us sunshine, lovely views, and a fun mix of birds to watch along the way. It was the perfect way to spend a relaxing weekend morning outdoors.
