Our hike to Laguna de Los Tres via the Monte Fitz Roy Trail was one of the most exhilarating adventures of our time in Patagonia.

Despite the cloudy skies and occasional gusts of wind, we were eager to take on the challenge and experience one of Los Glaciares National Park’s most famous trails.

A Cloudy Morning Start

We set off early in the morning, hoping to make the most of the daylight hours.

As we moved through the first stretch of the trail, we could hear the calls of birds hidden among the trees. A few White-crested Elaenias darted between branches, pausing occasionally to inspect their surroundings.

A Forest Full of Life
Thorn-tailed Rayadito
As the trail wound through a beautiful lenga beech forest, the birdlife became even more active. A lively group of Thorn-tailed Rayaditos flitted from tree to tree, their constant movement making them fun to watch.

Among them, a White-throated Treerunner climbed up a thick trunk with ease, using its sharp claws to navigate the bark in search of insects.

A Gradual Climb

The middle portion of the hike was a steady ascent, offering sweeping views of the valley below.

Though the towering peaks of Fitz Roy were still shrouded in clouds, the landscape remained breathtaking.
Rufous-collared Sparrow
A few Rufous-collared Sparrows hopped along the trail, seemingly unbothered by our presence. Their cheerful songs provided a pleasant soundtrack to our journey.

As we continued, we spotted a pair of Crested Caracaras perched on a branch, surveying the land below.

These striking birds of prey, with their distinctive black-and-white plumage and hooked beaks, are a common sight in Patagonia.

The Trail Becomes Tougher

With the wind picking up, the trail became more challenging.

The final stretch before the steep ascent to the lagoon was particularly demanding, with rocky terrain and strong gusts making each step more difficult.

With the increasingly difficult conditions and the long return journey ahead, we made the tough decision to turn back before reaching the final viewpoint. It was a little disappointing, but we knew it was the right choice.

Although we didn’t make it all the way to Laguna de Los Tres, the journey itself was unforgettable.

The ever-changing Patagonian landscape, the challenge of the trail, and the incredible birdlife made this hike one of the highlights of our trip.
