On another incredible day in Torres del Paine National Park, we set out for an afternoon hike along the Mirador Nordenskjöld - Sarmiento Lake Trail. This 2.7-mile trail, rated as easy, offered stunning views of the park’s dramatic landscapes. Though the clouds hung low over the mountains, the biggest challenge wasn’t the weather—it was the powerful Patagonian winds that accompanied us every step of the way.

From the very beginning, the wind made itself known, whipping through the open landscape with impressive force. Each step required a little extra effort, and we found ourselves laughing as we leaned into the gusts, determined to keep our balance. But the wind also added to the experience, making the scenery feel even more wild and untamed.

A Vast and Rugged Landscape

Despite the cloud cover, the views were breathtaking. To our left, Lake Nordenskjöld stretched toward the horizon, its surface rippling under the relentless wind. To our right, the rugged hills and golden grasslands extended toward the deep blue waters of Sarmiento Lake. The contrast between the two lakes, one glacial and the other a natural reservoir, was fascinating to see.

A Tiny Bird with a Tasty Snack
Rufous-collared Sparrow
Along the trail, we spotted a Rufous-collared Sparrow perched on a bush, gripping tightly as the wind tugged at the branches. It had found a small berry and was happily pecking away, completely unbothered by the powerful gusts. Watching this little bird enjoy its meal reminded us how wildlife adapts to even the toughest environments.

Raptors in the Sky and Grass
Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle
A Black-chested Buzzard-Eagle soared overhead, its dark silhouette contrasting against the gray clouds. Despite the wind, it glided effortlessly, scanning the terrain below. Closer to the ground, we spotted a Chimango Caracara standing in the grass, calmly surveying its surroundings. These birds of prey added to the sense of untamed wilderness that made Torres del Paine so special.

A Surprise by the Water
Red-gartered Coot
Near one of the viewpoints, we noticed a juvenile Red-gartered Coot swimming in the shallows. With its fluffy plumage and awkward movements, it was a fun sight to watch. It paddled around, occasionally dipping its head beneath the water before bobbing back up.

A Gathering of Upland Geese
Upland Geese
Further along, a group of Upland Geese caught our attention. Their striking white and brown plumage stood out against the golden grasses, and they seemed completely unfazed by the howling wind. Some were resting, while others wandered slowly through the landscape, adding a peaceful touch to the rugged terrain.

A Tiny Song in the Wind
Southern House Wren
As we neared the end of our hike, we heard a high-pitched song cutting through the wind. A Southern House Wren flitted between the shrubs, pausing occasionally to let out its cheerful tune. It was amazing how such a tiny bird could make itself heard over the relentless wind, a perfect reminder of the resilience of Patagonia’s wildlife.

The Mirador Nordenskjöld - Sarmiento Lake Trail was an incredible experience, offering a mix of stunning views, dynamic weather, and fantastic bird sightings. The fierce winds only made the hike more memorable, adding to the untamed beauty of Torres del Paine.
