Last weekend, we set out on a delightful hike along the Stonewall Mine and Lake Cuyamaca via Marty Minshall Trail in Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.

A Peaceful Start by the Mine

The trail began near the historic Stonewall Mine, where the quiet beauty of the area instantly set a calming tone. Surrounded by pine trees and golden meadows, we felt a sense of peacefulness as we ventured onto the path, eager to see what the day had in store.

Say's Phoebe and Song Sparrow Sightings
Say's Phoebe
Early into the hike, we spotted a Say's Phoebe perched on a fencepost, its cinnamon-colored belly catching the sunlight.

A little further along, a Song Sparrow treated us to its sweet melody, providing a lovely soundtrack as we continued on the trail.

Red-winged Blackbirds and Turkey Vultures

As we approached a small wetland area near the lake, a pair of Red-winged Blackbirds perched in the reeds caught our attention, their vibrant red shoulder patches glowing in the light.

Above us, a Turkey Vulture soared effortlessly, its silhouette cutting gracefully through the sky.

A Gathering of Juncos, an Oak Titmouse, and a Chickadee
Dark-eyed Junco
In the shaded parts of the trail, we encountered a lively group of Dark-eyed Juncos flitting between branches. Their cheerful calls added to the serenity of the forest. Nearby, an Oak Titmouse darted from tree to tree, pausing briefly as if to acknowledge our presence.

A Mountain Chickadee also joined the scene, its distinctive black cap and white eyebrows making it easy to identify as it foraged energetically among the pines.

Raptors and Woodpeckers
Red-shouldered Hawk
The sight of a Red-shouldered Hawk soaring overhead was truly captivating. Its broad wings spread wide as it glided effortlessly through the air.

A few moments later, the rhythmic tapping of Acorn Woodpeckers caught our ears, and we spotted them busily preparing their winter caches in a nearby oak tree.

Wren and Kinglet Delights
Bewick's Wren
A Bewick's Wren appeared next, foraging energetically in the underbrush, its long tail flicking as it moved. Not far away, a tiny Ruby-crowned Kinglet flitted among the branches.

This time, we were treated to the sight of its brilliant red crown as it paused momentarily—a vivid pop of color that left us both marveling at its beauty. Its quick movements and bright personality made it a highlight of the hike.

Lake Cuyamaca’s Avian Visitors
Great Blue Heron
As we reached the lake, the shimmering water reflected the blue sky above. A stately Great Blue Heron stood at the shoreline, its elegant silhouette a striking contrast to the surrounding landscape. Near the water’s edge, we also spotted a Loggerhead Shrike perched with quiet confidence, surveying its surroundings.
