Last weekend, we decided to explore the Three Bridges Loop to Los Peñasquitos Canyon Trail in San Diego. This 5.5-mile moderate hike promised stunning scenery and the potential for some great birdwatching, so we were eager to hit the trail. The weather was perfect, with clear blue skies and the warmth of the sun accompanying us throughout the journey.

Welcomed by White-crowned Sparrows

One of the first birds we spotted was a group of White-crowned Sparrows hopping along the trail’s edge. Their crisp black-and-white head markings were striking against the earthy tones of the landscape. They flitted from bush to bush, providing a lively start to our birdwatching adventure.

Near a cluster of Toyon bushes, we came across a group of House Finches enjoying their breakfast of bright red berries. Their cheerful chirping added a delightful soundtrack to the picturesque scene.

Yellow-rumped Warbler
Throughout the hike, we encountered many Yellow-rumped Warblers darting energetically through the trees. A group of Song Sparrows hopped playfully on the grass nearby, their lively movements and soft chirps adding charm to the morning.

Nuttall’s Woodpecker
In a quieter part of the trail, we were lucky to spot a pair of Nuttall’s Woodpeckers pecking at a tree trunk, their patterned feathers blending beautifully with the bark.

Nearby, a tiny Blue-gray Gnatcatcher flitted about, its soft call barely audible over the breeze.

A Few Familiar Faces
Say’s Phoebe
As we neared the end of the loop, a Say’s Phoebe perched on a low branch, and a Black Phoebe fluttered near a small stream.

Their graceful movements were a joy to watch, as always. We also saw a group of Bushtits busily moving from one tree to another, their small size making them seem like little bundles of energy.
