This December morning, we headed out to the Anza-Borrego Desert State Park for a hike along the Culp Valley Overlook Trail. Spanning 3.8 miles, this moderately challenging trail offered a fantastic blend of desert landscapes and birdwatching opportunities. The cloudy skies added an air of mystery to the experience, making our trek even more memorable.

The overcast sky cast a soft light over the desert, highlighting the rugged beauty of the trail. The stillness of the morning was broken only by the crunch of our boots on the sandy path and the occasional chirp of birds.

As we began the hike, we were greeted by a cheerful White-crowned Sparrow hopping through the brush. Later, a group of Black-throated Sparrows captured our attention, their distinctive facial patterns making them easy to identify.

Further along, we spotted a majestic Red-tailed Hawk soaring overhead, its russet-colored tail feathers standing out against the gray sky. Watching it glide effortlessly through the air was one of the highlights of the morning.

The trail’s rocky terrain provided a perfect habitat for wrens. We were lucky to spot both a Cactus Wren and a Rock Wren, each showcasing its unique charm. The Cactus Wren's descending song echoed beautifully, while the Rock Wren darted nimbly among the boulders.

Toward the middle of the hike, a California Thrasher emerged from the bushes, its long, curved bill unmistakable.
