On a sunny December morning, we ventured to the Crestridge Ecological Reserve near San Diego, California. Our route combined the Horned Lizard Bypass, Valley View, Red Tail, and Lake View Trails into a scenic 4.5-mile loop. This moderate trail offered a peaceful escape into nature, complete with lovely views and fascinating wildlife encounters.

A Bright Start

The morning sun bathed the landscape in golden light as we began our hike. The crisp air carried the scent of chaparral and pine, and the rolling hills were alive with the promise of discovery.

A Burst of Yellow

Yellow-rumped Warblers seemed to be everywhere, darting between branches and shrubs in search of insects. Their energetic movements and flashes of yellow brought liveliness to the more shaded sections of the trail. It was a treat to watch them flit about so actively.

As we climbed higher, we came across a couple of White-crowned Sparrows perched on low shrubs. Their crisp black and white markings stood out beautifully in the bright sunlight. A California Scrub-jay also made an appearance, its loud, bold call drawing our attention before it swooped gracefully between trees.

Phoebe and Mockingbird Moments

A Black Phoebe caught our eye next, perched near a rock outcropping. Its quick dips and flutters added a playful touch to the trail.

Not long after, a Northern Mockingbird made its presence known with its melodious song, showcasing its versatility as it mimicked other bird calls.

One of the most memorable moments of the hike was spotting a group of Western Bluebirds in an open meadow. Their vivid blue and orange plumage stood out against the golden grasses. They moved in and out of the trees, adding a pop of color to the serene landscape.
