On a crisp, sunny December morning, we set out for the Big Laguna and Sunset Trail in the Laguna Mountain area of Cleveland National Forest. The 6.5-mile loop, rated moderate in difficulty, offered the perfect mix of stunning scenery, invigorating exercise, and opportunities to connect with nature.

Early along the trail, we encountered several Acorn Woodpeckers busily stashing acorns in tree trunks. Their industriousness reminded us of the beauty of nature’s preparation for winter. Their sharp calls echoed in the forest, making them one of the hike's most entertaining highlights.

We were delighted to see a group of Mountain Chickadees flitting between branches, their cheerful calls filling the air.

Dark-eyed Juncos joined the mix, hopping on the ground in search of seeds. A small flock of Bushtits chattered as they moved collectively through the trees, adding to the lively bird activity.

American Wigeons and an American Coot
As we approached Big Laguna Lake, we were treated to the sight of several ducks on the water. Among them were American Wigeons and American Coots, their distinctive shapes and movements a calming sight. Watching them glide across the lake’s reflective surface felt like a gift from nature.

Birds of Prey and Majestic Moments
Bald Eagle
One of the most thrilling moments of the hike was spotting a Bald Eagle perched high in a tree. Its imposing presence and sharp gaze were awe-inspiring.

Nearby, a Red-tailed Hawk was also perched, scanning the landscape with its keen eyes. Witnessing these powerful raptors in the wild was a highlight we’ll never forget.

Hutton's Vireo
The trail continued to offer bird sightings, including a Hutton's Vireo darting around in the foliage and a White-breasted Nuthatch climbing down a tree trunk.

A Red-winged Blackbird added a splash of color as it called from the reeds near the lake. The variety of birdlife made every step of the trail exciting.
