This Thanksgiving morning, we decided to kick off the holiday with a hike on the Big Rock and Mesa Road Loop Trail in Mission Trails Regional Park, San Diego. At 2.6 miles and moderate in difficulty, this trail offered the perfect blend of exercise and nature to start our day on a high note. The sun was shining, and the crisp autumn air filled us with energy as we set off.

Greater Roadrunner
Early in our hike, we spotted a Greater Roadrunner darting across the trail. Its long tail and quick movements were unmistakable, and we paused to watch it weave gracefully through the shrubs. Seeing this iconic bird always feels like a special treat, especially on a holiday morning.

Yellow-rumped Warbler
As we continued, a group of Yellow-rumped Warblers flitted through the trees, their cheerful calls filling the air. Shortly after, a Nuttall’s Woodpecker caught our attention, tapping away on a tree trunk. Its striking black-and-white plumage stood out against the sunny backdrop, and we marveled at its persistence.

Further along, we encountered a pair of Western Bluebirds perched on a branch, their vibrant blue feathers glowing in the sunlight.

Nearby, a Say’s Phoebe sat on a fence post, occasionally darting off to catch an insect. A Black Phoebe soon joined the show, hopping along the trail and adding to the morning’s avian delight.

Anna’s Hummingbird
An Anna’s Hummingbird zipped by, its iridescent feathers catching the light as it hovered near a blooming shrub. Moments later, we heard the distinctive call of a Wrentit—a soft, bouncing melody that always brings a smile. We spotted it rustling in the bushes, its small, round body moving quickly between the leaves.

A Blue-gray Gnatcatcher flitted energetically from branch to branch, its tiny size and quick movements making it a joy to watch.
