During our last vacation in Japan, we ventured out on the scenic Kinunkei Trail in Kyoto. This 2.1-mile trail, moderately challenging yet rewarding, offered us a peaceful escape from the city’s busy streets. Surrounded by lush greenery and soft sounds from the nearby river, we felt eager to explore the rich landscape and hopefully encounter some local birdlife along the way.

A Serene Riverside Start

The trail followed a river for much of our journey, and the sound of flowing water was a soothing backdrop to our walk. Early on, we spotted a Gray Heron standing by the riverbank, its sharp eyes focused intently on the water. Just as we stopped to watch, it snapped up a small fish, making for a fascinating sight. Both birds seemed to have endless energy, constantly flicking their long tails as they moved. Watching them was a joyful reminder of the natural diversity around us.
