A Chilly Morning Hike: Sunset and Big Laguna Loop Trail

On a crisp September morning, we decided to tackle the Sunset and Big Laguna Loop Trail in the Laguna Mountain area of Cleveland National Forest. At 5.5 miles in length, with moderate difficulty, this trail promised beautiful scenery and plenty of birdwatching opportunities.

The day started off chilly and overcast, the clouds hanging low as we set out. But as the morning unfolded, the sun peeked through, lighting up the landscape and warming us up.

A Trail Full of Birdlife

It didn’t take long before the birds made their presence known. One of our early sightings was a Western Meadowlark, its bright yellow breast standing out against the muted tones of the trail.

Nearby, a White-breasted Nuthatch hopped along the bark of a tree, busily searching for food.

The trees rustled with activity, and we could hear the cheerful calls of an Orange-crowned Warbler as we continued our hike.

Signs of the Changing Season

As we walked, the air felt alive with the energy of birds preparing for the coming winter. Acorn Woodpeckers were a common sight along the trail, diligently stashing acorns into tree trunks—a sure sign that the cooler months were approaching.

We watched in fascination as these industrious birds moved about, storing their future food supply. Meanwhile, a few Dark-eyed Juncos flitted nearby, their quick movements a delight to observe.

Unexpected Sightings

Among the highlights of our morning was spotting a female Lazuli Bunting. Though less colorful than her male counterpart, she still captured our attention with her subtle beauty.

Not long after, we were thrilled to catch sight of a Western Flycatcher perched quietly, surveying its surroundings with careful eyes.

The trail also treated us to a spectacular view of a juvenile Red-tailed Hawk soaring above. Its broad wings cut gracefully through the sky as it glided effortlessly.

We couldn’t help but pause to take in the beauty of the moment, feeling grateful to witness these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.

As the sun continued to rise, a large group of Western Bluebirds crossed our path, their vibrant feathers catching the light as they flew between trees.

The trail seemed to be teeming with life, and it wasn’t long before we spotted a Hairy Woodpecker busy at work on a tree.

Nearby, a Pygmy Nuthatch was enjoying a snack, clinging to the bark in typical nuthatch fashion.

A Colorful Adventure

Near the end of our hike, we were delighted by the sight of a group of Lesser Goldfinches. Their bright yellow plumage contrasted beautifully against the green foliage.

As we reached the final stretch, an American Coot floated lazily in a small pond, the perfect calm end to an active morning on the trail

Our hike on the Sunset and Big Laguna Loop Trail was the perfect mix of beautiful scenery, birdwatching, and that satisfying feeling of being surrounded by nature.
