On a sunny morning in late August, we decided to explore the Gateway Trails' Lollipop Loop in Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The trail, a short and easy 0.8-mile loop, promised a leisurely walk through beautiful surroundings. The bright sunshine and clear skies made for an inviting day to be outdoors, and we were eager to see what this little loop had to offer.

The Lollipop Loop is a straightforward trail, perfect for a relaxed morning hike. As we set off, the path gently wound through the forest, surrounded by tall trees and patches of wildflowers. The trail’s easy terrain allowed us to take our time, enjoying the sights and sounds of the forest as we strolled along.

A Birdwatcher's Delight

One of the highlights of our hike was the variety of birds we spotted along the way. Early into our walk, we noticed a group of Dark-eyed Juncos hopping around in the underbrush. Their lively movements and distinctive calls were a cheerful addition to the morning.

As we continued, the bright yellow of a Wilson's Warbler caught our eye, flitting among the leaves and adding a splash of color to the greenery.

Encounters with Feathered Friends

Further along the trail, we were excited to spot a Dusky Flycatcher perched on a branch, its soft gray and olive tones blending perfectly with the forest.

A group of Bushtits made an appearance as well, moving through the trees like a tiny flock of acrobats, their constant chatter filling the air.

A Familiar Friend

Northern Flicker Northern Flicker

As we neared the end of the loop, the loud call of a Northern Flicker drew our attention. We watched as this striking woodpecker moved from tree to tree, its reddish-brown plumage catching the sunlight. Finally, a group of Mountain Chickadees rounded out our birdwatching experience, their friendly presence and distinctive black caps making them easy to spot.
