This past Saturday, we decided to kickstart our weekend with a refreshing hike on the Batiquitos Lagoon Trail in Carlsbad, California. The trail, known for its easy difficulty level and scenic 3.4-mile stretch, promised a relaxing and invigorating experience. The sky was overcast, creating a cool and tranquil atmosphere, perfect for a morning hike.

As we walked along the trail, we were delighted by the variety of birds that greeted us. The sight of Snowy Egrets with their elegant, white feathers was a frequent and welcome occurrence.

Their graceful movements added a touch of magic to our journey. We also spotted a Song Sparrow, filling the air with its melodic tunes, making our hike even more enjoyable.

The lagoon was bustling with activity. Mallards paddled gracefully across the water, while a Black-bellied Plover scuttled along the shoreline, its distinctive black belly and white face standing out.

We were thrilled to catch sight of a couple of Great Blue Herons, their tall, statuesque figures poised majestically by the water’s edge.

Nuttall's Woodpeckers
Our adventure took an exciting turn when we saw a pair of Nuttall's Woodpeckers. Their striking black-and-white plumage and rhythmic drumming on the trees were a fascinating sight.

Not far off, a Black Phoebe darted about, its sooty-black feathers contrasting sharply with the muted tones of the morning.

Small Wonders: Hummingbirds and Finches
Lesser Goldfinch
The trail was alive with smaller, vibrant birds as well. A couple of Lesser Goldfinches flitted from branch to branch, their yellow plumage brightening the landscape. We were also lucky to spot an Anna's Hummingbird, its iridescent feathers shimmering even in the subdued light.

As we neared the end of our hike, we were serenaded by a House Wren singing its heart out. A Mourning Dove cooed softly from the ground, its gentle calls blending harmoniously with the surrounding sounds.
