This past Saturday morning, we enjoyed a delightful hike on the Rios West Trail to the Nature Center in the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve near San Diego, California. The easy 2.5-mile trail provided a perfect combination of serene natural beauty, warm sunny weather, and abundant birdwatching opportunities.

We began our hike under an overcast sky, the cool morning air adding a refreshing touch to our walk. The Rios West Trail, known for its gentle terrain and scenic views, promised a relaxing and enjoyable experience. As we set out, we were excited to explore the diverse wildlife and natural beauty of the lagoon.

About halfway through our hike, the sun broke through the clouds, casting a warm glow over the landscape. The sudden burst of sunlight enhanced the vibrant colors of the lagoon, making the surroundings even more picturesque. The change in weather added a cheerful note to our adventure.

One of the highlights of our hike was spotting a Snowy Egret and a Great Blue Heron flying gracefully above the lagoon. Their elegant movements and striking plumage were a sight to behold, adding a sense of wonder to our morning. Watching these majestic birds in flight was truly captivating.

Continuing along the trail, we came across a Double-crested Cormorant drying out its wings. Its outstretched wings and regal posture made for a striking image. Nearby, a Hooded Oriole perched on a branch, its vibrant yellow and black feathers standing out against the green foliage. The oriole’s presence added a splash of color to our birdwatching experience.

As we neared the water, we noticed a Pied-billed Grebe wading through the shallows. Its small, sturdy form and distinctive bill made it easy to identify. Along the way, we also spotted a House Finch, its cheerful red plumage and melodious song bringing a touch of joy to our hike.
